‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only different types of good weather’

Ruskin’s words came to mind this afternoon when a desperately needed thunderstorm arrived and dumped 3/4 hour of rain on the garden and surrounding fields, the first rain we have seen in this part of Devon for over 7 weeks.

Rain after Drought

Was there ever a smell so wonderful

as parched dry earth after rain?

That dusty, musty, mildewed smell,

dampening this desperate terrain.

Meadows, shades as desert sand

sigh and reach to grasp their share,

before the deluge ends, generously leaving

that pungent scent saturating the air.
